Quit smoking NEW YORK

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Smoking increases the risk of serious complications after major surgery, but former smokers who quit smoking at least one year before undergoing surgery were similar to those of people who have never smoked risks, according to a new study stop smoking.

Current smokers in the study had an increased risk of heart attack, blood clots, pneumonia and even death after surgery compared with those who never smoked and those who had stopped smoking.

"The long-term adverse effects of snuff consumption quit smoking are well known, but have such effects in the context of acute and surgery was not well understood," said lead author Dr. Faye Jamal American University of Beirut Medical Center in Lebanon stop smoking .

These findings add to the range of quit smoking the harmful effects of snuff, Jamal told Reuters Health by email.

Using the American College of Surgeons base, quit smoking he and his colleagues examined the history of smoking, risk factors and postoperative complications 30 days for 125,000 current smokers, 78 000 former smokers who quit smoking at least one year and 400 thousand people who had never smoked stop smoking.

The researchers studied events such as heart attack, blood clots, pneumonia and death quit smoking .

Although smokers were more likely than nonsmokers to die after surgery, former smokers who had stopped smoking for at least a year before had no increased risk of death compared with those who had never smoked.

Current smokers were 17 percent more likely to die and 53 percent more likely to have heart problems severe lung former smokers who had quit smoking, according to findings published in AMA surgery.

Although stop smoking the increased risk of death was detectable, even if someone had smoked the equivalent of a pack a day for 10 years, the authors noted, the longer and heavier the smoking, the risk of complications quit smoking.

Even when the researchers took into account the stop smoking effects of disease associated with snuff, former smokers had a 28 percent increased risk of heart attack than non-smokers, compared with 77 percent increased risk among current smokers .

For pneumonia, the former smokers had a 16 percent higher risk than nonsmokers, stop smoking but in comparison to a 50 percent higher risk among current smokers. About 2 percent of smokers develop pneumonia after surgery, compared to 1 percent of nonsmokers.

Nearly 3 percent of current smokers ended up on a ventilator for more than 48 hours after surgery, compared with 2.8 percent of former smokers and 1.8 percent of those who had never smoked.

"We know that smoking increases the risk, quit smoking but stop smoking it was difficult in previous studies to distinguish between risks caused by smoking-related problems, such as the heart and lungs, and the risk of smoking," said Dr. David Warner , of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

"Knowing that smoking is a risk in itself is important because it suggests that quitting smoking can reduce the risk," Warner told Reuters Health.

Cigarette smoke has different effects on stop smoking the body and can make surgery more risky in many ways, said Warner.

"For example, quit smoking the carbon monoxide in smoke decreases the ability of blood to carry oxygen, what complications (loss of blood flow to the heart) most likely," he said.

Smokers who have left should quit smoking stop smoking find these results encouraging, he said.

But the study does not prove conclusively that the reasons to stop downward risks, stop smoking according to Judith Purchasable Research Center for quit smoking the Prevention of Stanford in California.

"Because patients were not randomized to continue or quit (or receive smoking cessation treatment vs no), the analysis should take into account the differences between the three groups, quit smoking as it is likely different in many ways," told Reuters Health by email.

For example, former smokers were more likely to be male, white, obesity and diabetes than those who had never smoked, he said.

Smokers also were more likely quit smoking to have more than two alcoholic drinks per day and have obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic respiratory failure caused by smoking.

The results are consistent with the overwhelming evidence of the negative effect smoking has on many body systems, Purchasable said. The quit smoking
quit smoking results should also encourage smokers to quit and encourage physicians to encourage their patients to quit smoking before undergoing major surgery, he said.

"Most smokers want to quit smoking - and surgery is an excellent time to do so," said Warner.

The main limitation of this study was that they could not evaluate the effects of smoke-free life of less than a year before surgery, quit smoking Jamal said but immediate surgery might be a good time for doctors to tell their patients to quit.

Knowledge of short-term negative consequences of smoking, such as surgical complications, might be a better motivation to quit the known long-term risk quit smoking
, he said.
